Ian in numbers:

40 years’ experience (and counting!)...

…With a love of numbers from an early age, accountancy was a logical path to follow for my career. Looking at a page of numbers was like looking at a picture (although I couldn’t do a painting by numbers!)

My career started in 1982 in London, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1986. As my experience grew, I came to realise how much my work helped the clients.

In 1996 I became a partner of the firm I trained with and have continued in a similar role with several practices over the years.

In 2020 I finally set up my own practice, IS Accountancy. I still have clients that have been on their journey as long as myself. I am enormously honoured and proud to continue to provide personalised support and insight for my clients, helping them navigate their numbers.

IS Accountancy also provides a unique opportunity and platform to make a real personal difference in the lives of those I work with each day, attracting an incredible team who are able to carry out their work commitments around their life commitments. This balance is core to our approach and purpose, as a business, and as advisors.

3 things I love most about being a Chartered Accountant:

  1. Making a difference for my clients; I feel so good after a client meeting that has gone well, whether it was a significant light bulb moment for them, or simply reducing/removing their worries.
  2. The variety: every client is unique with their own set of matters to deal with. While some may share the same ambitions all our paths are uniquely different.
  3. Navigating through their numbers; helping clients find their way.

My no.1 piece of inspirational advice about work/life:

‘Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do’

When I’m out-of-office I’d most like to be on the State Highway 6

With no budget or time limitations, I would love to be driving through the Southern Alps on the State Highway 6, the South Island of New Zealand.

Locally, I love spending time in the New Forest or along the Jurassic Coast such as Lulworth Cove. I also enjoy staycations in UK Cornwall and the Lake District.

My most favourite destination I’ve travelled to so far: 45.1527° S, 169.8926° E

New Zealand, South Island in particular, because of it’s breath-taking scenery – mountains, sea, lakes and glaciers in close proximity.

A perfect number to me is 4...

…It is an even number; it also represents a quarter – good for sharing and no one is left out.

The B1G1 cause I’m most passionate about us making a difference within...

…Has to be the fundamentals of life.

Water and food first, then shelter, then education.

Like with your accounting, once you have the fundamentals in place you have the foundations to grow and thrive. It alleviates the anxiety and worries of how you will provide day to day, so that you can respond to what each day brings, and be the person you are designed to be.
